The Editor, Sir:
If the bill relating to the granting of bail is approved by Parliament then it will encourage police to wrongfully arrest innocent Jamaicans. If the human rights and lawyers who are making this claim step back and listen to what they are saying then they will be surprised at themselves.
This brings to mind the politicians who make all these promises before they are elected, but don't fulfil the promises once they are elected. In the case of the politicians, because some of them did wrong, what we should do is stay home and not vote for anyone. We really don't do that because what would happen to the country is far greater than having a government that needs to iron out some issues. The same thing goes for the bill; what is a country without rules, laws and penalties? (The ones we have aren't working and no one has the guts to make any changes).
Jailed
If rules are put in place that a person can be jailed for up to 60 days pending investigation then so be it. It there is concern that police will abuse their power and wrongfully arrest someone due to spite or revenge then that policeman should be investigated, jailed and fired; that can be a part of the bill. The investigation should be by an independent entity.
We have to do something; this problem has been festering for too long. We cannot continue to be sitting ducks while the violence continues to wreak havoc on our country. We have to do something now!
I am, etc.,
