Trainers' Association rejects $40 million
published: Friday | September 26, 2008

Edwards

The Jamaica Racehorse Trainers' Association has rejected a proposed $40 millionpurse increase, according to its president, Vin Edwards.

Edwards said that the increase offered by CTL was less that what was received two years ago and was inadequate.

"The compound inflation over the period is just over 36 per cent and when you take into consideration the multiple increases in feeds, saw dust and hay, among other things, it would require in excess of $50 million to satisfy the trainers, as what is now offered represents only a 10 per cent increase," explained Edwards.

Having rejected the offer at a meeting of their executive on Tuesday, the trainers will meet with CTL today to put forward fresh proposals.

"The vast majority of trainers are finding it difficult to make ends meet and many of them are restive. Given the rising costs affecting us, we are looking forward to a better offer," added the president.

Edwards disclosed that the association has written to minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Finance, Don Wehby, under whose portfolio the racing industry falls, outlining their concerns.
