NWC ordered to stop discharging untreated sewage
published: Friday | September 26, 2008

The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is warning the National Water Commission (NWC) to immediately stop discharging untreated sewage in Long Mountain, St Andrew.

The utility company was served with the enforcement notice by NEPA on Wednesday.

The agency says based on tests, the untreated sewage, which came from the NWC's lift station in Long Mountain, poses a serious threat to groundwater and to the health of residents in the area.

Rehabilitate area

NEPA says NWC must immediately correct the situation and rehabilitate the area of land affected by the overflow.

The utility company has been given until tomorrow to submit a maintenance plan for the station and another 14 days to replace a broken pump which was responsible for the discharge.

NEPA says if the guidelines are not followed, enforcement action will be taken.

Several residents have been raising concerns about the situation, with some expressing fear that it could have serious health implications.
