Hayles eyes McNeill's job
published: Wednesday | September 24, 2008

Hayles: I am seriously considering it. - File

WESTERN HANOVER Member of Parliament, Ian Hayles, is lining up for the job of People's National Party (PNP) Region Six chairman.

Hayles, who beat Donovan Hamilton by 173 votes to win his constituency for the PNP in the 2007 general election, told The Gleaner that delegates within Region Six have asked him to contest the chairmanship.

"I am seriously considering it. I will consult with the constituency and the leadership in the region before making a decision," Hayles said.

Dr Wykeham McNeill is the outgoing chairman of Region Six. He had said that he would not be seeking re-election but may have had a change of heart following his failure to secure one of the four vice-presidential posts in Saturday's internal election.

Attempts to reach McNeill on Monday proved futile. Region Six comprises the parishes of Westmoreland, Hanover and St James.

First-time MP

The PNP, which won 28 of the 60 seats in the 2007 national poll, garnered six of the nine consti-tuencies in Region Six.

Hayles, a first-time MP, was a spokesperson for Portia Simpson Miller's Team PNP campaign.

Noel Arscott, another rookie MP, was elected vice-president in Saturday's internal election.

The six regional executives of the PNP will meet on October 5, when challenges could be made.
