STATHS cool KC
published: Tuesday | September 23, 2008

Jermaine Lannaman, Gleaner Writer

BJORN White scored a double as high-riding Kingston College (KC) were yesterday beaten 2-1 by St Andrew Technical (STATHS) at Bumper Hall, in the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel urban area Manning Cup.

In the meantime, defending champions Jamaica College (JC) chalked up their second win, hammering Denham Town 7-1 at Old Hope Road, while former champions Bridgeport High were held 1-1 by Eltham High.

"It was very good result and I am happy that we are now atop of the table. I am not surprised that we were able to pull it off as I knew we had it in us, " said STATHS' coach, Keith Nichol.

First defeat

KC, who along with Wolmer's, Calabar, Waterford and Bridgeport entered the season as favourites for the title, were handed their first defeat in three games, while in the Bridgeport-Eltham contest, Nigel Dennis and Darren Mattocks, scored on either side of the half to earn a share of the points for their respective teams.

At STATHS, KC, who recorded a 2-0 win over Edith Dalton James and an impressive and 9-0 victory over Kingston High, were hoping to extend their winning streak.

However, STATHS, who had 2-0 and 3-0 wins over Penwood and Edith Dalton James, had other ideas. STATHS took the lead in the 22nd minute through White and after five more minutes, the striker doubled his and his team's advantage, one they held for a 2-0 half-time lead.

Despite a strike from the competition's leading marksman, McKauley Tulloch, KC could not score again as STATHS held on for a memorable victory.

"It's a hard loss, but it's early days yet," said KC's coach, Wayne Fairclough. "We can't really complain as they came out at us and scored two brilliant goals."

At Eltham, Bridgeport, with a 2-0 record, were seeking to put some distance between themselves and the hosts, who had a win and a draw record. Bridgeport took the lead in the 32nd minute through Dennis, who, lurking inside the box, was given a relatively free header which he duly put home.

Equaliser

This didn't dampen the spirits of Eltham, who, buoyed by their vociferous home team supporters, came roaring back and in the 68th minute, equalised through a goal-mouth tap-in from Mattocks.

"We played up to par in the first half. However, in the second half we allowed Eltham to play and that brought them back in the game," said a dejected-looking Anthony Patrick, coach of Bridgeport.

Eltham's coach, Gregory Allen, said with glee on his face, "I am really pleased with the result. It was always going to be a tough match playing Bridgeport. But I thought my guys came out and gave a good account of themselves."
