The Editor, Sir:Now that the Government seems to be adamant that it will not be allowing the erection of any building in unsuitable places, I would like to suggest that the Clarendon Parish Council take a second look at the site chosen for the construction of the mid-island stadium in May Pen, Clarendon.
May Pen is still one of the fastest growing towns in Jamaica, and a facility like this should be sited on the outskirts of the town where there is ample parking for motor vehicles, adequate space for proper drainage, less noise disturbance and less congestion in the town.
Demolished
Some years ago, the Cuban government, under the previous administration, had offered to build a stadium for us in Clarendon.
A site was chosen and work started. A cycle track was laid down and a part of the athletics track. With a change of government these things were demolished, and the site used for other purposes. To my thinking, if this gift by the Cuban Government was allowed to reach fruition, then who knows, probably we could have produced several Asafa Powells, Usain Bolts, Melanie Walkers, etc., before now.
The Cubans are still our friends, and I believe our present govern-ment should approach them and see if their offer still stands. There is enough suitable land in the Halse Hall area which is accessible from every direction and which is ideally suited for this purpose.
Let us not make a similar mistake again, by siting this stadium in an inappropriate location.
I would ask the National Environment and Planning Agency to examine this current site and give its approval before 'hard-earned money' goes down the drain.
I am, etc.,
