The Editor, Sir:Please allow me to use this medium to highlight (Big Up) an article written by Dr Orville Taylor and published in The Sunday Gleaner of September 21 and titled, 'P end P'.
In this particular article, he stated that if you take away any of the Ps from PNP, you would bring it to its 'N' ... end. He further mentioned that the Ps represent Portia and Peter and in reality, this seems to be exactly what is happening in the Peoples National Party lately.
In 2006, there was a leadership election which Portia Simpson Miller won by less than 250 votes over her nearest rival, Peter Phillips. Again, a few days ago, there was another leadership race between the two which resulted in Mrs Simpson Miller being the victor by 373 votes.
Challenges
Are these challenges going to repeat themselves or has the contention been laid to rest? Your guess is as good as mine!
The point is that these two politicians galvanise the greatest individual support among party delegates, each with a differing leadership style, but it seems so difficult for them to see that the best possible option could be to collaborate their energies to form a viable opposition and a formidable alternative to present solutions to our country's problems.
On one hand, Portia Simpson Miller is undoubtedly very popular and on the other, Peter Phillips is said to be the more technically sound of the two. I have always wondered if there was anyone in the PNP preaching 'teamwork', but alas, here comes the article by Dr Taylor; it is spot on.
Lessons to be learnt
Under the subheadings of 'Lessons from Athletes' and 'Team Unity', he compared Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt with Portia and Peter, and eloquently addressed the rivalry between the athletes and how the the two men conquered this distraction, resulting in them being real winners in the end.
The article from Dr Taylor is simple and to the point. You don't need spectacles to see that Portia Simpson Miller and Peter Phillips have accomplished a lot in their own right and indeed have a place in the PNP comes to its 'N' ... the gospel according to Taylor.
I am, etc.,
