WEST INDIES representatives Carlton Baugh and Shawn Findlay were in impressive form yesterday as they smashed centuries to lead their teams, champions Melbourne and St Elizabeth CA, into the semi-finals of the JCA All-Island Limited Overs competition.
Baugh, who recently won a recall to the West Indies set-up, slammed a majestic 102 to lead Melbourne to a 216-run win over Westmoreland CA, while Findlay, who showed promise against the Australians early in the summer, and followed up with an equally good showing against Canada and Bermuda in the recent Tri-Nation Series, made an unbeaten 104 to lead St Elizabeth to a 41-run over Kensington CC.
In other results, Portland CA led by Jamaica College schoolboy Oliver Walker and Herman Henry, defeated the Xavier Marshall-led St. Ann by 28 runs, while national two-day Semi-Pro League champions St. Catherine CC defeated Manchester CA by three wickets.
At Melbourne Oval, Baugh led his team from the front and thanks to a an equally impressive 95 from the in-form Damian Henry and 51 from former West Indies youth representative Andre McCarthy, the home team was able to post 357-7 off its allotted overs.
This was against West Indies youth pacer Jason Dawes, who grabbed 2-61, and part-time spinner Nicoy Samuels, who claimed 2-43.
Westmoreland could only manage 141 in reply with Grenadian Andre Fletcher top scoring with 54. Pacer Sheldon 'Goaty' Smith, 4-64, and Nikita Miller, 2-18, were the pick of the hosts' bowlers.
At Alpart Oval, Findlay played with both patience and aggression in compiling what was a calculated innings as St. Elizabeth, batting first, posted 239-5. Findlay was best supported by out-of-favour West Indies batsman, Brenton Parchment, who made 59, while bowling for Kensington, pacer Haniff Palmer took 3-45 and David Bernard Jr 2-25. West Indies pacer Darren Powell ended without a wicket.
In reply, Kensington made a game of it, however, unable to cope with Ainsley Goss, 2-5, Chris Dwyer, 2-1, and Alton Beckford, 2-26, they eventually fell for 198-9. Raville Brown, 63, and Bernard Jr, 53, made the most runs for Kensington.
At St Ann's Bauxite, the hosts were expected to get the better of Portland, however that was not to be as Walker and Henry both turned in impressive performances. Batting first, Portland made 203-8 with left-arm swing bowler Andre Clarke claiming 3-43.
St Ann, in reply, could only manage 175, with veteran Orville Pennant scoring 46 and Emilio Reid, 31. Marshall was run out without scoring.
The day's other encounter, St. Catherine versus Manchester at Chedwin Park, was reduced to 30 overs per side due to a waterlogged outfield and, in the end, it turned out to be a low-scoring contest.
Batting first, Manchester were shot out for 71 courtesy of pacer Andre Russell, 3-6, and legspinner, Odean Brown, 3-18. St. Catherine then struggled to 72-7 - this after being in a precarious position of 27-4 - with pacer Dwight Stewart, 3-12, causing the most damage.
Melbourne will face Portland and St Catherine will play St Elizabeth in the semi-finals, which will be played next week at venues to be decided.
