Samba time in Jamaica
published: Sunday | September 14, 2008

Turns out Jamaica and Brazil have more in common than just a love for football.

Brazilian Ambassador to Jamaica Alexandre Gueiros and wife, Gladys, celebrated the 186th anniversary of Brazilian independence with their Jamaican and diplomatic colleagues, last Monday evening. The ambassador explained that marking the anniversary in Jamaica was special not only because this was his first posting as an ambassador, but his wife has Jamaican family connections on her grandfather's side.

formal diplomatic ties

Add to that the years of formal diplomatic ties (started in October 1962), the cooperation in the energy, agriculture and investment sectors, the imminent opening of a Jamaican embassy in Brazil and the popularity of reggae in the big South American nation, and you understand why everyone felt at home at this amicable affair.

Guests out included European Union delegation head Ambassador Marco Mazzocchi-Alemanni; Trinidad and Tobago High Commissioner Yvonne Gittens-Joseph; Chilean Ambassador Alfredo Garcia and wife, Luz Santamaria; Haitian Charge d'Affaires Max Alce; Dominican Republic Ambassador Filomena Navarro; Argentine Ambassador Mario Pino; Anthony and Jeanne Watson; Gloria Palomino and Tarquinio Caldarelli; Ada and Jorge Morales; Madai Hernandez and Marcelo Muņoz; Anton and Maria Boerger; Ambassador Lorne McDonnough; Ramon and Deidre Corvera; Christopher and Sarah Levy; Charles and Lisa Johnston; Dr Simon Clarke; Marie-Jose Nzengou-Tayo; E. Courtenay Rattray; Ambassador Dr Matthew Beaubrun; Ambassador Maxine Roberts and sister Valerie Roberts, Desmond Pereira; Younna Bailey; Guillermo Hernandez and Igor Hevia.

Long time no see! Cuban Ambassador to Jamaica Gisela Garcia, who was badly injured in an accident earlier this year, has returned to the social scene after much rehabilitation in her native land. Here, she is welcomed back by (from left) Governor General Sir Kenneth Hall, Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Minister Dr Ken Baugh and Brazilian Ambassador Alexandre Gueiros.
