Brazil and Argentina fail to shine
published: Friday | September 12, 2008

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP):

BRAZIL AND Argentina were held to draws by lesser opponents on Wednesday night and Chile climbed to fourth place in the standings in the latest South American qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup.

Brazil were booed off the pitch after being held to a scoreless home draw by 10-man Bolivia, while Argentina conceded an equaliser in the final seconds to draw 1-1 at Peru.

Chile crushed Colombia 4-0 while Uruguay were held 0-0 at home by Ecuador.

After eight of the 18 rounds in the marathon qualifying campaign, Wednesday's results left Brazil, Argentina and Chile all on 13 points behind leader Paraguay on 17.

Impressive draws

With the top four to qualify directly for the 2010 World Cup and the fifth team to go into a further play-off against a CONCACAF team, Uruguay are fifth on 12 points, two ahead of Colombia and with Ecuador a further point back. Peru and Bolivia's impressive draws on Wednesday were not enough to lift them from the bottom two rungs of the standings.

Disappointed with Brazil's lacklustre play, fans jeered the team throughout the match.

"It was a night when everything went wrong," said Milan's Ronal-dinho. "When the victories don't come, it's normal for the fans react like this. We can only hope we can revert this situation the next time we play."

Rarely threatened

Despite playing with Ronal-dinho, Sevilla's Luis Fabiano and new Manchester City signing Robinho in attack, Brazil rarely threatened.

"We did all we could," coach Dunga said. "But as time went by our players became too anxious to score and that made things difficult."

In addition to failing to win the Olympic gold at the Beijing Games - Brazil were third after falling to Argentina in the semi-finals - the five-time world champions were coming off a loss to Paraguay and a home draw with the Argentines in their previous two qualifiers.

Bolivia, who lost away to Ecuador on Saturday, relied solely on counter-attacks and surprisingly had a couple of good chances.

"To earn a draw against a team with world-renowned players like Brazil is a historic result for us," Bolivia coach Erwin Sanchez said.

Brazil failed to improve even after Bolivia defender Ignacio Garcia was harshly sent off in the 57th minute.

"We lacked patience," Robinho said. "We were too desperate to score and that didn't help."

Five-year streak

The result extended Brazil's streak to five years without winning consecutive matches in a single round of World Cup qualifying. The last time it happened was when they beat Colombia then Ecuador in September 2003.

The small consolation was that Brazil extended their 15-year unbeaten streak against Bolivia.

Peru scored in stoppage time to secure a dramatic 1-1 home draw against Argentina, extending the visitors' winless streak in qualifying to five games.

Peru scored in the final seconds of the match as Fiorentina fullback Juan Vargas charged up the left wing and delivered a cross to Once Caldas striker Johan Fano, who directed the ball past Argentina's lunging goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo of Lazio.

Ahead

Internazionale's Esteban Cambiasso had put Argentina ahead with what appeared to be the winner in the 82nd minute, converting a cross from Real Madrid's Fernando Gago.

Argentina had 58 per cent of possession in the match, but couldn't turn that to their advantage against an opponent they were expected to beat.

Chile's big win was their first over Colombia in World Cup qualifying for 11 years.

Colombia coach Jorge Luis Pinto said his team "lacked power" while "Chile handled the ball well, played with surprise, deploying the kind of football that must be played these days".
