Gun deal - who is accountable?
published: Friday | September 12, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

Your editorial of September 10 reflects the level and professional capacity of some of our leaders. There are too many umbilical cords in the public service, be they political, biological or 'old boys club'.

I believe the permanent secretary of the ministry should also be held accountable for this "cock-up" in the gun deal, as you described it. The permanent secretary manages the operations of the ministry and ought to advise the minister on strategies, activities and procedures for achieving the stated policy goals, and the soundness of these policies.

Crime fighting

How effective has this permanent secretary been in executing the designated function of his ministry in crime fighting?

Mr Prime Minister, security issues are among our major concerns for Jamaica. We cannot afford an apprenticeship programme or employment through networking.

The Civil Service Association of Jamaica also needs to wake up.

I am, etc.,

JOHN GORDON
