MPs should take jobs seriously
published: Friday | September 12, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

In your recent article captioned 'Absenteeism in Parliament', it seems to me that these elected representatives do not take their jobs seriously. If they did, then there would not be such a high record of absenteeism.

Tending to the country's business must be top priority and, as a Jamaican, I'm expecting nothing less of these public servants.

Serving one's country is a privilege and must be treated or looked upon as a great and noble cause. Being a public servant comes with myriad of challenges and they have to realise that they must do everything in their power to prepare for these challenges of high office.

Representatives

These elected representatives must posses an abiding commitment to making a difference in the lives of its citizens, upholding democratic values, and demonstrating compassion in the service to others.

In the words of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, "We must never forget our responsibilities as politicians to our country and its citizens. We must always remain humble before our people."

We, as a people, can only be ignored and taken advantage of so much before we just tune ourselves out. In spite of the failure of politicians to serve us properly, we must not ignore our duties as Jamaican citizens. We must demand our rightful authority over our em-ployed politicians and be adamant in making them serve their assigned responsibilities. Let me remind these elected/employed public servants, we are not here to serve you, but you to serve us.

Get back to the business of the people or you will be removed from your office and position.

I am, etc.,
