Letter to my country
published: Sunday | September 7, 2008

I write a letter to my country, Jamaica

It's time to stop the killing and let's be one

Let us love again, stop the killing and let peace reign

I write a letter in Jesus' name to the men who murder like it's a game

To all the gangs whey a maintain a order

Nuh bother with the border, stop mek a hard life harder.

I write a letter with my ink

Because the crime and corruption make the country stink

And this island could be a paradise

But our hearts have gone cold like ice

Let's go back to where it began

To One Love like the Bob Marley song

To a time when Christ was our foundation

Let's remember what it was like

When we didn't have to watch our head backs

And when we could work and play without attack

When we helped each other and every woman in the community was like a mother.

The time has come for us to return

What do we earn when we kill and burn

Let us love again and let love reign

From the Blue Mountain peak to the Dela Vega City plain.

- Seon Lewis

---------------------

Jamaica

The land of wood and water where speeding men and women race

to the prayer of 'Eternal Father',

a most blessed and beautiful place;

Eternal Father has blessed this land

with a speeding woman and dancing man.

The beating chest and dropping arms,

the jumping and screaming all about are nothing but dramatic charms attracting people north, west, east and south to fall in love with this little place, this blessed land, this darling space.

Its mountains ruin storms and hurricanes,

its music soothes the savage beast,

a magnificent wonder in its name - Jamaica, Jamaica, and a great feast of yam, banana, dumpling and dasheen with ackee and salt fish like a king and queen.

A cat may look at a king

and every dog shall have his day,

so when you hear us start to sing

'Eternal Father' - give us a way

so we can finish a heart-stopping race:

my land, my home, my everlasting space!

- Nicholas Alexander
