The Editor, Sir:
By all means the citizens of Jamaica should respect what their flag symbolises, and I am sure all of the athletes who are being criticised for their handling of the flag certainly love and respect what it stands for.
Why do Jamaicans think they always need to walk a thin line to make an impression on other countries that they perceive as being above them? The talent that was displayed in Beijing was proof enough to show the world that Jamaicans believe in hard work, dedication and integrity.
Indeed, the flag is a piece of cloth, which symbolises 'strength, hope, happiness, freedom, pride', etc. Why condemn those who hug it, wear it or wallow in it as they achieve all that it stands for?
Not necessary
I implore these disgruntled readers to understand that their concerns should not be about the flag, but about the Government, its systems and the people.
Until the Jamaican flag truly signifies what the Government should represent to the people, there is truly no reason for such a consistent, trifling debate.
I am, etc,
