The Editor, Sir:The suggestion by a letter writer that the Jamaica Public Service company should run more of its wiring underground is a good idea, but not feasible.
First, it would be too costly. It would definitely drive up the cost of electricity in Jamaica because the money spent putting wires underground would have to be recouped. We would either pay for it through enormous bill or taxes.
Time-consuming
Second, it would take years to undertake such an enormous venture. Third, it would be extremely difficult to undertake. Jamaica has very rocky and hilly terrain in many areas so digging would be difficult and time-consuming and, therefore, very expensive.
This idea may work in Kingston by expanding the sewer systems, but I cannot see this being cost effective for the rest of the island. Even doing a project like this in Kingston would be very expensive - one we cannot afford at this time.
Also, you would be surprised to know how many First World countries, like the USA, still have power lines above ground.
