NOTE-WORTHY - Sand under the rug
published: Friday | August 29, 2008

Sand under the rug

I am convinced that the matter of the stolen sand will be quietly swept under the rug and the 'high and mighty' will work out this matter among themselves beyond the eyes and ears of ordinary Jamaicans.

The media should keep asking the hard questions until the

right answers are given to the public. Let us not forget that the environment belong to all Jamaicans.

Customs corruption

What should be done to clean up corruption in the Customs Department?

Simple. Just do exactly what Danville Walker, the commissioner of customs has suggested, start levying penalties at three times the value of the goods.

The law provides for this. The corrupt ones would soon get the message.

We will shortly have to honour Danville Walker for exceptional service to this country.

Cultural, sporting heroes needed

More cultural and sporting national heroes are needed in Jamaica.

Herb McKenley, Bob Marley, Louise Bennett-Coverley, are a few noteworthy names that immediately come to mind.

Usain Bolt and Veronica Campbell can also be considered among several others who have excelled in their respective fields through hard work and dedication and have made Jamaicans at home and abroad extremely proud and able to say "I am proud to be a Jamaican", and have made the Jamaican flag fly high above all others for the world to see.

The people should be able to choose their heroes and one way is to have a referendum at election time with the names of candidates and if a majority votes for a hero then let it be the will of the people.

Re-purchase the guns

Has anyone considered a gun buy-back programme? This might decrease the number of crimes currently plaguing the island.

There has got to be something that can be offered to someone who turns in a gun that will help rid the country of crime. Also, why not have the youths to help keep Jamaica clean by cleaning roads and keeping them free of bushes.

Jamaica is a very beautiful place, why not do something to help it remain that way?
