During his lifetime, William James Bourne, popularly known as Mass Will, lit a candle of hope that illuminated the lives of those around him.
At a thanksgiving service celebrating his life on Saturday at the Sharon Baptist Church in Santa Cruz, the son of the small St Elizabeth town was fondly remembered.
Hailed as a family man, he was remembered as an exemplary father and husband, raising 12 children who have become successful members of society and leaders in their fields. He also spent more than 60 years in a happy union with his wife Mavis.
"He was a dedicated and loving husband, who, despite the vagaries of life, remained entirely devoted to his family," said his daughter-in-law Lois Bourne, who added that she often wished younger men could observe the complete and total respect with which he treated his wife.
Quality time
A barber and farmer, Bourne spent quality time with his children, inculcating in them respect and responsibility, which was balanced with his love for them.
An avid Christian, Bourne along with his wife was recently recognised by the Sharon Baptist Church for more than 30 years of service to the institution.
Both his granddaughter Toria Bourne and the Reverend Jacob Powell, minister of the Sharon Baptist Church, referred to Bourne as a role model, citing his love and dedication to his family, coupled with his unassuming, humble and peaceful nature.
He had a passion for music and, in the 1950s, formed a mento band along with his brothers and friends, which was in high demand across the parishes of Trelawny, St Elizabeth, Westmoreland and Manchester. It was only when the sound system business began to dominate the entertainment industry that the group's popularity waned.
He also was a great fan of cricket and never missed a match in which the West Indies participated.
William Bourne was said to be a great socialite, making friends far and wide and embracing not only those among his generation but also his children's friends. He was remembered as one who was always concerned about others.
He was described as someone who rejoiced in times of happiness and brushed away disappointments.
