The Editor, Sir:Regarding the controversies about the proposed crime-fighting measures, I wish to remind the prime minister and the Government that we must be careful in creating institutions which will be left as a legacy to future generations, and am of the same view as expressed by Mr Frank Phipps in his recently published letter.
Adopt strong measures to deal with a desperate situation, yes, but make them temporary so that they are not left to be used by unscrupulous persons for purposes which were not intended. We should not destroy our democracy in the process of apprehending a handful of wrongdoers.
Do not forget the events of the 1970s when the PNP almost robbed us of our democratic way of life. Many of these evil men and women are still around and no doubt will do it again if they have the opportunity; so our democratic institutions should be strengthened, not weakened.
I am, etc.,
A. JAMES
