FORMER NATIONAL Twenty20 squad invitee Damian Henry produced a brilliant even 100 to guide title holders Melbourne to a 66-run win over Kensington in the feature match of the third round of the JCA All-limited overs competition at Melbourne Oval yesterday.
Henry clobbered four sixes and 10 fours in an 112-ball knock that piloted Melbourne to 307-8 who, in reply, restricted the men from Preston Road for 241-9 off their allotted 50 overs.
"It wasn't bad. I paced myself as I batted for 38 overs and it turned out it was a good innings," said Henry, who was scoring his second century for the season; having done so also in the two-day competition. "It was a bit different because they had five spinners and I prefer pace. So to bat spinners right through was unusual. But it was good"
Andre McCarthy, 57, and Dwayne Thompson, 32, were Melbourne's next best batsmen, while bowling for Kensington, Rasheed Outar, 2-31, and Peter Colquhoun, 2-33, took most wickets.
Struggled from beginning
Needing to score a shade over six runs per over to win the contest, Kensington struggled from the beginning and were suppressed although Outar made 74, Ryan Francis 45 and Horace Miller 42. That was against good bowling from Damion Jacobs, 3-36, and Ramon Hutchinson, 2-29.
In winning, Melbourne took over sole leadership of Group D with the maximum 12 points from three outings, while Kensington (eight) are now tied in second with the JDF, who went down to a surprise five-wicket loss to St. Thomas.
Scores: JDF 178 (Denniston Reid and Shacon Chambers 47; Omar Brooks 2-38, Ian Morgan 2-9. St. Thomas, 179-5 (Christie Jones 33, Marvin Dar-lington 36 not out, Fitzgerald Anderson 45 not out; Damian Grey 2-37).
In other results, two-day champions, St. Catherine CC joined Melbourne and St. Ann, who were idle on the day, as the only teams remaining with 100 per cent win records following a comprehensive 158-run victory over Portland at Chedwin Park.
Danza Hyatt, returning from the Eastern Caribbean where he was in training with the Stanford Twenty20 squad, made 80 and Tamar Lambert 63 as the Saints, batting first, piled up 287-8. Portland were shot out for 129 with Carl Brissett getting 22 against Odean Brown, 5-27, and Lambert, 3-32.
