AFTER WATCHING the women's 100-metre finals at the Olympics in Beijing, China, this morning, hundreds of diehard motorsport fans will turn their attention to the Palisadoes International Raceway, where the local go-kart championship continues today.

If either Kerron Stewart, Shelly-Ann Fraser or Sherone Simpson takes home the gold in the Olympic sprint, then champagne corks are expected to pop open at the go-kart track in jubilation.

Today's race meet begins at 9:30 a.m., and the Jamaica Karting Association (JKA) will be providing a television set to facilitate karters and patrons who want to watch our female athletes sprint for gold at the Olympics.

"We will dedicate today's meet to them," says Neil Williams, president of the JKA.

Since last month's international race meet, most of the competitors seem to have maintained a low profile.

Training

"No! We have been training," says Sam Law, in reference to his nine-year-old son, Jonathan.

He disclose that Jonathan, who is being coached by Peter 'Jacko' Moodie, continues to improve his lap time and should again be a strong contender in the 80 cc events. Fraser McConnell of Tru-Juice fame will make his debut in this class today. Based on Law's performance, he appears to be a cut above the 50 cc Class.

The 50 cc Class has always sprung surprises and generate excitement. Among those expected to upset the apple cart are Senna Summerbell, Justin Sirgany and Zacre Davidson.

Myers expected to dominate

Fresh from his Miami trip last month, teenager Philip Myers is once again expected to dominate the meet and the Rotax Junior Class. He is also the leading contender for the Abe Ziadie Memorial Trophy.

Joel Jackson and his siblings, Justine and Sean, look ready to dominate the Rotax International Class. The contest between Peter Moodie Jr and Chris Myers should provide some excitement for the crowd.

After her debut three weeks ago at the Dover circuit, Ornealla Leahong should have learned from that experience, and should be now ready to take on her rivals in the Rotax International Class. Another female, Sabrina Sirgany, who recently got some international exposure, is expected to do well.

Among some of the favourites the crowd will be looking out for are Colin Daley Jr, Thomas Issa and Dane Lawson.

"My nephew (Sebastian Rae) and myself will be returning with a bang in the Rotax Masters Class," warns Peter Rae.
