Using waste for composting
published: Friday | August 15, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I read Shelly-Ann Thompson's article on page three of The Gleaner (August 12) with interest, especially the information that our farmers are using too much fertiliser and improperly at that.

One question, though: has anyone from Rural Agricultural Development Authority or the Ministry of Agriculture ever considered the prospect of wide-scale composting?

I am not very knowledgeable of the entire process of composting, but I am aware that once vegetation is not contaminated with organism from 'meat', preparing material for composting is not expensive - just a bit time-consuming at first.

There is so much material available also - leaves, grass, vegetable and tuber peels.

I am, etc.,
