The Editor, Sir:
I became somewhat saddened when I read about the drug-testing of Jamaica's athletes in the Olympics.
While I do applaud the efforts of the International Olympic Com-mittee in its continued pursuit of ridding the games of drug cheats and doping scandals, I cannot help but empathise with these Jamaican athletes.
No one can reasonably deny that Jamaica has had a continuous history of producing very talented athletes. However, over the years, many of these athletes have been forced to compete with drug cheats who have continuously used banned substances to enhance their performances.
The Balco scandal has forced many confessions and embarrassed many athletes who are forced to return medals previously won as well as having their records erased.
My heroes
What many who question the performances of our athletes need to understand is that finally the playing fields have been levelled.
These Jamaican athletes have a chance to compete on equal ground and thus, their natural talent and dominance of the sprint begin to shine.
It is unfortunate, however, that because of the dishonesty of others they have become targets.
However, as a Jamaican, I am very proud of their efforts and accomplishments. I will be one of the many who will be glued to the television sets to cheer them on. Whether they win medals or not, to make it to the Olympics itself is a great accomplishment.
They will always and forever be my heroes.
I am, etc.,
