Spanish Town, St Catherine:
After a 15-year absence, the Push Cart Derby will return to Discovery Bay, St Ann, on Sunday, August 17.
The event is being revived by the Kaiser Bauxite Company, which sees it as an opportunity to enhance the cultural awareness of the community, while building relationship with the residents.
This year's event will be under the patronage of Governor General Sir Kenneth Hall and under the theme 'Push cart, not drugs'.
Bring back memories
The organisers were quick to point out that rule would be enforced at the event as well.
"We believe that if we emphasise keeping drugs out of the system, then the event will remain squeaky clean and will be good to persons who choose to visit the settings," said Winston Wallace, public relations manager.
Wallace expressed the hope that the event will bring back fond memories of the derby and a thrill to see the drivers and navigators controlling the carts racing at high speeds off the paved hill at Port Rhodes in the parish.
The top cart will receive $150,000, plus sectional prices.
