Dilemma: decorating the dorm
published: Sunday | August 10, 2008

Hi Sharon:

I'm trying to decorate my new room. I'm currently a college student, first year. Anyway, I've seen your articles and they are quite fascinating. The room is pretty small, it comes with a bunk bed, a dresser and a built-in closet. It also has two sets of windows. I need some tips on how to get my room to look fabulous. I'm confused because I don't know where to turn, literally, where this room is concerned. I'm accustomed to having space. I honestly would appreciate a few pointers on how to get my room feeling spacious and comfortable, instead of cramped up. I have a limited amount of cash to spare because of college. Please help me!

Lyphe, Mandeville.

At this time of year, I am sure a lot of students like you are faced with this dilemma. A part of moving into a new dorm includes creating a comfortable atmosphere that eases the transition of campus life. It should also be ideal for effective study and a haven to come back to at the end of the day. Transforming a small space into one that is comfortable and seems spacious can be challenging but necessary, since I believe you will be spending a few good years of your life there.

Therefore, it is imperative that the end result best reflects your home away from home. I noticed that you mentioned having a bunk-bed in the room, which suggests you may have a roommate. I would also assume you have sought her approval and input, since it will affect her one way or the other.

Balance

The bunk-bed would undoubtedly be the largest piece of furniture in the room that will take up significant space. You can, however, ensure that it uses space wisely by rearranging the room to create balance.

This can be done in an asymmetrical arrangement which is to evenly distribute visual weight on either side of the room. In this case, placing the bunk bed against the wall that is most suitable, preferable where it will be the first thing seen when entering the room. Place the dresser and closet together on the opposite side. ,p> Both the closet and dresser will be close enough in size to the bunk-bed, thus creating balance. However, if the closet is built-in, you will have to place the dresser beside it and then have the bunk bed on the opposite side.

This arrangement will also open up the room, giving you extra space in the centre to place accent pieces, i.e., area rugs, or an ottoman, which is an ideal piece for extra seating, or a table based on your choices.

Focal Point

Dress your bed so that it becomes your fashion statement, the ultimate focal point. Invest in a comforter that complements your colour scheme. Along with that, use colourful complementary throw cushions, enough to place against the wall and to the head and foot of your bed. Thereby transforming your bed into a beautiful sofa, ideal for day décor and a great way to impress your friends and guests.

colour

One sure way of having a small cramped room seem larger is by using light or neutral colours on the wall. However, since you probable won't be allowed to paint those walls you can minimise the institutional colour by creating a wall mural. This you can do yourself if you are on the creative side.

Purchase art paper, coloured pencils or artist paint. And unleash your artistic talent to create your own customised mural. Select the wall most suitable to hang your mural, as this will be considered your accent wall.

Mirrors

Do invest in a large mirror to hang on the wall as well. This is a one great way of tricking the eyes into believing there is more space.

Storage

To create more space in your dorm room, you will need to maximise storage. A bunk-bed is usually raised off the floor, leaving room under the bed for storage. Pick up crates and plastic containers from the stores.

Pack the stuff you won't need every day into them. This includes extra clothes, sheets, books and your luggage. If your budget allows, you can invest in hanging closet organisers.

Another smart way to maximise space is by using a hanging shoe pockets. They are also perfect to stuff extra socks, as well as some of your supplies, such as pencils, rulers, etc.

Accessories

This is one sure way of bringing about dramatic change to your bedroom and to make it comfortable without costing too much. Hang simple sheer curtains at the windows.

It is another way to add colour and personality to your room. If your closet is without doors you can also hang two panels of sheer to unify and to also hide the stocked interior.

Lighting

You will also need good lighting for study time. Invest in a lamp with multiple brightness settings so you can have an option of adjusting when you need to. The shades, of course, should complement the colours of your room. The right lighting will also serve to maximise the colours of your room.

Wall frames

These are cheap yet decorative items that will add more colour and personality to your room, even some photos of family and friends. Colourful frames can be found at reasonable prices. You can also be creative and make some in your spare time.

One final piece of accessory for your room, and surely not the least, is a waste-paper basket. Purchase or make one yourself from boxes that you can cover with gift wrap paper. This will add to your décor and serve to keep your room clean, and the cleaner your room is, the more space you will have.

Good luck on making your dormitory spacious and comfortable.
