ONE FAMILY in Bushy Park, Clarendon, is trying to come to terms with how, on Friday, two children got locked up in the trunk of a 2001 Daewoo motor car until they suffocated. The car was parked at home.

Dead are eight-year-old Trico Lewin and his sister, five-year-old Latauvia Lewin.

Unsupervised

The May Pen police have reported that family members left the children home un-supervised Friday morning about 10:30, and they were seen up to about 1 p.m. by neighbours.

On return of the children's grandmother, Hortense White, at 2 p.m., Trico and Latauvia were missing.

Other family members were summoned and a report was made to the May Pen police.

A search was carried out and a family member found the bodies of the two children in the trunk of the car shortly before 8 p.m. on Friday night.

The bodies were removed from the car and taken to the May Pen Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The police have not yet established a cause for the deaths because there were no visible marks of violence on the bodies. The police are awaiting a post-mortem while carrying out their investigation.

Trico had been living with his grandparents since he was three, while Latauvia joined the household in July to spend the summer holiday with her brother and grandparents.

When The Gleaner visited the home in Bushy Park, yesterday, the grandmother tearfully related: "I left them there in the morning to do some business in Kemps Hill. When I came back in the afternoon I called them, but I did not hear them. I called several times but did not hear them, so I started searching for them."

Friendly

She added: "I went to the police station about 7 p.m. to make a report after we made several searches. And while I was there, my daughter received a call that they were found in the car trunk and the police came back to the house with us.

"They are very friendly and every one loves them, so I don't know what happened or why they would lock themselves in the car."
