Criminals have no rights
published: Sunday | August 10, 2008

The EDITOR, Sir:

Let me start by saying, criminals have no rights. Every human when he or she comes into this world is entitled to rights. However, when you chose to become a criminal for whatever reason, be it sociological, political, economical, etc (I would welcome a debate on this anytime), you have forfeited those rights, regardless of what anybody else might say.

Just imagine a single mother being robbed and then being subjected to another indignity; or a person who has strived to run a business only to find himself/ herself the victim of extortion; or some innocent person being murdered for his/her hard-earned possessions. The list is endless.

Then, how can any law-abiding and moral person tell me these perpetrators are entitled to rights when they act like animals?

And for those who object to a DNA database, I ask, what have you got to lose? They can take my DNA anytime. And I further ask activists, where were you when an eight-year-old girl was wrenched from her mother's arms? Victims have rights.

I am, etc.,

A.N. McLean
