AFTER HIS record-breaking performance at last Sunday's 'Freedom of Speed' race meet, held at the Dover Raceway in St Ann, Kingston businessman David Summerbell now has his eyes set on winning the Caribbean Championship title.
He will be part of a four-man team scheduled to leave the island in another two weeks for the second leg of the championship, which will be held in Barbados on August 31. The other members of the team include Montegonians Doug Gore, Gary Williams and Chris Campbell - the new kid on the block.
Apart from the no-show of Peter 'Bull' Thompson and Gerald Rhoden, the anticipated battle between Summerbell and Gore lived up to expectation, especially after the heavy downpour, which left the 1.6-mile long track in a wet and slippery condition.
The loud cheers from the thousands of fans who turned out for the showdown told the tale of the level of excitement.
annals of dover
Driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8, Summerbell erased his old lap record with a new time of one minute 19.095 seconds. This car has now gone down in the annals of Dover as the fastest car to ever raced at that circuit.
Summerbell won the first Modified Production race in convincing style, but after the rain, he got a big surprise - Doug Gore. Immediately after the starter waved the green flag, both sped up the straight and were neck and neck approaching the first corner.
By the time they cleared that corner and approached the left-angled Goodyear corner, Gore assumed the lead, and from there led to the finish.
"I planned the race very well, I knew that my rain tyres would have given me the advantage for the two laps. Based on my calculation, I expected Summerbell to come back at me the last three laps," said Gore, whose engine gave way just after he crossed the finishing line.
The following event, Summerbell started at back of the pack, and after the first two laps chased and caught his rivals, then went on to win convincingly again.
The most outstanding performance of the day was that of motorcyclist Stephan Chin, who won both bike races. What made his wins so special was that a year ago he met in a serious accident at the track and almost lost his life. He had a brain surgery and many thought he would he would never ride again.
Returned in style
The lanky rider returned in style and looking to once again dominate the local competition. Congrats. Automotives wish you well, Stephan.
Although Peter Rae did not deliver, he demonstrated that he was still a strong competitor. Among the other good performers were Teddy Burton, Guy Fraser, Brian Foster, Rohan Clarke and Dwayne Rowe.
The new kid on the block, Chris Campbell, who missed out on registering his first win at Dover, is one to watch out for. Campbell led in one of the events and, approaching the aces, his car came to a halt, several metres from the finishing line.
