Hue, Kelly recalled
published: Tuesday | August 5, 2008

Harbour View mid-fielders Jermaine Hue and Keith Kelly could well be singing the Bob Marley song Coming in From The Cold, as both have been included in a 23-man local-based squad to begin training on Thursday, August 7, for the country's upcoming World Cup qualifier against Canada.

Both players, despite their obvious qualities, have not been a part of the national team set-up for some time. Hue, a long-time Harbour View player who lit up the local Premier League, ventured to North America to play in the MLS for Kansas City Wizards in 2005 where he stayed for one season. The following year, he moved to Mjallby, Sweden, for a short stint before heading back to Jamaica.

The 30-year-old Hue, who made his debut for the country over nine years ago, was last invited to the national squad in February as the country prepared to face Costa Rica in an Ash Wednesday friendly international.

Kelly, now 25, was once seen as the brightest talent on the local horizon. That belief seemed justified when at 17 years old, he was picked up by famed French club Paris Saint-Germain. He was later loaned to Belgian club Mons, before returning home where he represented Arnett Gardens.

He made another move abroad to Trinidadian club San Juan Jabloteh in 2005, where he suffered a badly broken ankle. That injury kept him out of serious action until last season, when he returned to Harbour View FC, his first club.

Impressive

Kelly, who made his senior team debut in November 2001 and who last played for Jamaica against Barbados in 2005, did little to convince until recently, in a practice game against the national team while playing for Harbour View. In that game, both he and Jermaine Hue impressed technical director René Simoes enough for him to invite them to the squad.

"They are playing like new people. I like what I see now," Simoes said of the duo, who showed good mobility while providing defense-splitting passes for their forwards.

Besides Hue and Kelly, seven Under-20 players were a part of the camp. Central defender and team captain Andre Darby (Naggo Head), his central defensive partner Keithy Simpson (Cavalier), right back Levaughn Williams (Sporting Central) and Andre Campbell (Portmore United), representing the entire Under-20 defensive unit, were called up. Of that four only Darby has been invited before.

Forward Andre Clennon (Waterhouse) earned his first call up, while central mid-fielders Evan Taylor and Davian Thorpe, both of Reno, have again earned the right to train among the big boys.

Also included in the squad are goalkeepers Donovan Ricketts (unattached), Shawn Sawyers (Portmore United), Dwayne Miller (Harbour View) with O'Brian Woodbine (Reno), Eric Vernon (Portmore) and Jermaine Taylor (Harbour View) completing the list of defenders.

Seba's Keniel Moodie and Hugh Howell of Waterhouse earn call ups as central midfielders, while Ricardo Cousins (Portmore) and Jevaughn Watson (Sporting Central) are listed alongside Hue and Kelly as offensive midfielders.

The trio of forwards Kavin Bryan (Harbour View), Keammar Daley (Meadhaven) and James Thomas of Portmore United have kept their places in the squad.

All the invited players will report to the players house, which was recently refurbished by courts, at midday Thursday and remain until camp is broken on August 14.
