The island's leading producer of organic fertiliser has welcomed the Govern-ment's plan to address the ongoing problem of high fertiliser prices.
Trevor Brown, research and development director of Rescue Organic fertiliser, told The Gleaner Tuesday that farmers desperately needed financial support to purchase the commodity.
"Anything that can make the farmers' life easier and carry forward the cause of production, we are in support of," said Brown.
The Ministry of Agriculture said late Monday that a subsidy programme, which was announced two weeks ago by portfolio minister, Dr Christopher Tufton, is to be introduced for small farmers who are registered with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority.
Donovan Stanberry, permanent secretary in the ministry, said vouchers would be issued to these farmers who will get discounts on purchases.
The ministry is currently working out the mechanisms of the programme, which when completed, will take effect.
"The voucher amount is to be decided. As soon as we have ironed out all the details, the minister will make an announcement," said Stanberry.
