'Comrade in distress' pleads for party unity
published: Thursday | July 24, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I am forced to write this letter as a comrade in distress. I thought these 'big wigs' in the PNP would use the time in Opposition to get back to grassroots, get back to the core functions and ideals of the founding fathers of the party. But no, Mr Phillips and his cronies are so focused on themselves that they cannot see the harm that will come to the party with another leadership challenge.

I have come to the conclusion that we have become a party of egotistic, self-serving and, frankly, pathetic people, hell-bent on promoting ourselves instead of the needs of the people we are to serve. What moral right does a Peter Phillips have to assume leadership of the PNP? Doesn't he and the likes of Maxine Henry-Wilson see the fall-out they will cause? Oh no, they are too focussed on promoting themselves. I do want to tell them that all they will achieve, whether or not they are successful, is to secure another term for the JLP.

Stand behind our leader

I call on the delegates of the party to stand behind our leader, Comrade Miller. Let us build the party and rid it of these men and, indeed, women who, for whatever reason, cannot think of the needs of the country we love. Right now the country needs a strong Opposition to 'police' the Government. We need politicians who are willing to be public servants, not public masters, as with the likes of the Peter Phillips of this world. Please, comrades, concentrate on building the party, getting back in touch with the common people. Take the example of a divided JLP, see how long it took them to assume power? Not because of the tremendous job we were doing, but because they were divided.

Rid the country of the crime

I honestly believe that the time has come for all parties to work together to rid Jamaica of those bent on bringing us down the dark alley. We should join with the prime minister of the day to rid the country of the crime and violence which now prevails. Think about country, not self.

I am, etc.,
