NOTE-WORTHY

Prospect, St Mary

In the LIFESTYLE section of yesterday's Gleaner, in the article, 'Experience a Jamaican Vacation - Pt 2', Prospect Plantation was incorrectly listed as being in St Ann. Prospect Plantation is very much in the parish of St Mary, as close as it may be to the White River border. Too often, the parish of St Mary is cheated in this way and places as far up in St Mary, such as James Bond Beach in Oracabessa, are often noted in the press as being in Ocho Rios which is in St Ann.

The Garvey case

Tavares-Finson could not have done much research. Even I, a Gleaner reader, could remember reading that the pardon was granted and at the time, applauded the Seaga government for pressing the (Marcus Garvey) case. Or could it have been slack, lackadaisical civil servants? And so, what mechanism will be put in place to avoid such embarrassment to the civil service, which should be in the premier league of the country's servants? My humble suggestion: training in basic research for all parliamentarians. Training in customer service/care for all our civil servants, and across the board to all providers and deliverer of services to the public in general. But most important, workers, no matter where we serve, we need to have some 'home pride' and integrity in our work.

A working process

I applaud Dr Phillips' challenge for the leadership position of the People's National Party. Not on the grounds that Mrs Simpson-Miller is a bad leader, but on the grounds that such a challenge demonstrates that the Peoples' National Party is the party with the kind of characteristics needed in a political party in a democratic society. According to the constitution of the party, the leadership position is fair game for members of the party. As such, challenges to that position are encouraged. I feel a sense of pride to know that the party whose ideology I support has once again shown it has the values needed to govern democratically.

Contrary to the current hoopla surrounding this issue, Dr Phillips' reasons for the challenge and Mrs Simpson Miller's aptitude for the position are irrelevant to the process. This is not about Dr Phillips vs Mrs Simpson Miller; it is about a process that works in a country that is otherwise carrying water in a basket up a steep hill of political backwardness.
