The Editor, Sir:There is a serious problem with car stealing and break-ins currently taking place in the New Kingston area. One Friday evening in March, I parked my 2004 Honda motor car in front of the Courtleigh Auditorium on St Lucia Avenue, while I worked.
On returning to the car at approximately 11:50 p.m. I found that the ignition had been tampered with. Apparently, the culprit could not get the car to start because of a special mechanism in the starter set-up. I was lucky, as there was only minor damage to the ignition, so I could drive the car home.
On another occasion, a friend lost his Honda Civic motor car which was found some days later in rural St Elizabeth. No one was arrested.
Car not recovered
More recently, a female acquaintance had a similar experience. She parked her Nissan Sunny motor car in front of a business place, went in to do her business and returned to find her hand bag on the pavement and the car missing. It has still not been recovered.
The latest theft took place on Friday, July 11, on St Lucia Avenue. A co-worker parked his 2004 Honda Civic at about 6 p.m. and returned two hours later to find only broken glass at the spot where it was left.
I went with him to the New Kingston police post to file the report and was shocked to hear the frequency of car theft and break-ins in the area. One police officer said four reports of stolen cars in New Kingston were received in one day.
I am, etc,
