Can men catch the hug bug?

Most men that I have encountered in Jamaica don't like to be hugged by other men. Rather, bring on the girls! Some of us even label those among us who are willing to embrace men as homosexuals.

However, there is absolutely nothing wrong with males hugging males. In fact, boys who are hugged generously by their fathers are more likely to be comfortable with hugs from other males. This is not to suggest that we should only give and receive hugs from males.

The ideal is to be able to give and receive hugs from both males and females. Nothing beats depression like a warm, loving hug. Before you dismiss this as some mushy ramblings of a crazy mind, let us explore what other men have to say about hugging.

Hugging is healthy

Charles Faraone, in Chicken Soup for the Soul, says, "Hugging is healthy. It helps the immune system, cures depression, reduces stress and induces sleep. It's invigorating, rejuvenating and has no unpleasant side effects.

"Hugging is nothing less than a miracle drug. It's all natural. It is organic, naturally sweet, contains no artificial ingredients, non-polluting, environmentally friendly and 100 per cent wholesome. It is an ideal gift for any occasion, and fun to give and receive. It is an underutilised resource with magical powers. When we open our hearts and arms we encourage others to do the same," Faraone continued.

Why would we want to deprive ourselves of giving and receiving from our male friends and family members this wonderful gift that is so powerful and priceless? A hug is wrapped in nothing but love. We open our arms to people we care about. In my view, people who go about hurting other people are themselves hurting. This is why they spread hurt.

Men who are happy are busy loving and caring for themselves and their families. They are engaged in community and nation building.

There is a man who has taken hugging to another level. He founded National Hugging Day on January 21, 1986 for the purpose of promoting the value of hugging all year round, especially between friends and family. The Rev Kevin Zaborney, a pastor in Michigan, founded the day. He also founded National Whiner's Day, which we will not discuss at this time. For those who are wondering, Rev Zaborney lives with his wife Pamela and fathers two successful stepsons.

National Hugging Day

National Hugging Day has been embraced internationally in countries such as Canada, Guam, England, Australia and Germany. Recently, Russia has joined in the celebration.

It is not too late for Jamaicans to board the hugging train. The first rule is to ask first. If the answer is yes, be macho enough to hug with love and joy.

According to Virginia Satir, also in Chicken Soup for the Soul, we need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.

Men, let us lead by example, let us hug not only our girls and women, let us hug our boys and other men. Remember to ask first, as homophobia and personal preferences may make persons uncomfortable. Those of us who want Jamaica to join in National Hugging Day are invited to visit www.nationalhuggingday.com. Zaborney would welcome us.

Jamaica can become the hugging centre of the world. More love will flow among us. Then we can truly sing Bob Marley's One Love from our hearts.
