HOTTEST TOPICS ON THE COCKTAIL CIRCUIT

A fool and his money

1 The writing has been on the wall for some time now, but the greedy continued to ignore what were clearly signs of impending trouble. Some did try to read the tea leaves and had requested refunds, but none had been forthcoming for the last three to four months and so they, too, were sweating it out like everyone else. But that biblical quote rushes to the fore, 'A fool and his money are soon parted'.

Still living high on the hog

2 Some say the young Turks got burnt in the meltdown; others say they did not, as they not only took their money elsewhere. They have been for some time now distancing themselves from the organisation for which they acted as recruiter-in-chief.

Consequently, they have not lost a penny, but are smiling all the way to the bank and still living high on the hog. For some of those they recruited, it's an entirely different story.

No funds available

3 Even some of the closest advisers and insiders seem to have got burnt in this one, as the 'family accounts' that they traded on, and which offered up to 15 per cent in monthly returns, were inaccessible up to press time, with no funds available to them either.

Not a good move

4 Some have been saying that the move was never a good thing, offshore facilities or not, in the first place, as it was definitely not the kind of company reputable business people should associate with, as there was all kinds of talk, official and otherwise, of money laundering.

Can they manage?

5 Are the imported high-ranking police officers up to the task?

Timing is everything

6 Not all Comrades are happy; on the other hand, Labourites are ecstatic. Some say timing is everything and this time the timing is so off it is the equivalent of signing his own, political death warrant, as it could be seen as extending the JLP's hold on power.

What's at play?

7 The absence of the usual summer gridlock from the streets of Kingston have some wondering what is at play. Is it the cost of fuel forcing motorists to be frugal in their motoring habits, or is there more? Supermarkets aisles are empty, too!

Air Jamaica rebranded

8 Some fear that the groundwork is being laid for the rebranding of Air Jamaica to 'Footwear Airlines'.

Oh, that unexpected visit!

9 Many years ago, the family migrated to Britain, leaving behind the 'trusted family friend' to manage their real-estate holdings. They kept hearing, however, of the boom in rentals here and the high prices properties in St Andrew were fetching. Not theirs, however, so imagine their surprise, as well as that of the trusted friend, when they made an unexpected visit to the island last month and a visit to their properties turned up tenants paying sums way in excess of what they were being told was what they were fetching? Now there's talk of fraud and courthouse, but, as those involved are from the 'proper' background, some expect an out-of-court settlement.

Crazy foreign policy

10 First there was the snubbing of the American president. Now there is talk that the King of Spain was also snubbed for an audience with President Chávez. Is this a case of same-way-so, or a foreign policy going bananas?
