Phillips to square off with Bahamian
published: Wednesday | July 16, 2008

Robert Bailey, Freelance Writer

JAMAICA'S ROLAND Phillips will face Christian Cargill of The Bahamas in today's boys' Under-14 singles final of the International Tennis Federation's (ITF) junior championships at the University of the West Indies (UWI) starting at 9:00 a.m.

Phillips secured his place in the final by defeating Adrian De Silva of Trinidad and Tobago 6-1, 7-6 in yesterday's semi-finals while Cargill whipped Jamaica's Daniel Harris 6-2, 6-2 in the other semi.

All-Jamaica final

Meanwhile, it will be an all-Jamaica final in the girls' Under-14 section between Sheleta Haughton and Michael-Ann Denton, at the same venue. Haughton got the better of Melena Lopez of Barbados 6-4, 6-4 in the first semi-final, while Denton got by compatriot Thadria Kepple 6-3, 7-6 in the other semi.

Meanwhile, Brandon Burke booked his place in the quarter-finals of boys' Under-18 singles competition following an exciting 6-2, 7-5 victory over Zach Jiganti of the United States.

Burke, who is seeded fifth in the tournament, said he was happy with his performance.

"I am feeling good," said Burke. "I am very happy with how I played and I am also very happy to be in the quarter-finals, especially at home," said Burke, who attends American Heritage High School in Florida.

"I thought I played very well because I was 5-2 up in the second set and he stopped for an injury time-out. After time-out he picked up the momentum but I regathered myself and took it back," Burke said.

Burke will face his doubles partner, Darian King, in tomorrow's quarter-finals. Third-seeded King from Barbados recorded an easy 6-2, 6-3 victory over Japan's Yuta Hirokawa.

Expecting an exciting match

Burke said he is expecting an exciting match against King.

"I think I have a good chance heading into the quarter-finals because I will be playing against my doubles partner but I am expecting a tough match from him," he said.

In the other boys' Under-18 singles match played yesterday, Jamaica's Macoy Malcolm was beaten by Andrew Superstein of the US 7-6 (8), 6-2.

Jamaica's girls failed to secure a victory in the Under-18 singles competition. Monique Hanson lost 6-0, 6-0 to Sanae Ota of Japan and Nordian Campbell went down 6-0, 6-1 to Nicola Parker of the US.
