Another view of Bolt in Olympics
published: Wednesday | July 16, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

After reading the Pastor's article on Bolt not being able to run the 200m in 19.32, I would like to clarify a few things for him.

He mentioned that the 200m was run by Michael Johnson in a record 19.32 sec which is true; what is not true is that he did not run them in a record two 100m.

The pastor simply divided 19.32/2 and you cannot do that. Actually Johnson ran the first leg of the 200m in 10.12sec and the second leg in 9.2sec. Our pastor has to realise that Johnson was already on high momentum when going into the second half of the 200m.

Also, Johnson broke the record in 1996 (19.72) which stood for 17 years with a time of 19.66sec. He later in August went on to lower the record to 19.32sec. This stands today, and the only person to ever come close is Tyson with 19.62 on June 4, 2007.

Bolt is a faster 100m runner than Johnson, so let's say if Bolt can run the first leg in 9.8 sec and the second half in 9.4 that will equate to 19.2sec and I honestly have to ask if Bolt really "CANNOT" do that.

I applaud Bolt for his performance thus far, and if Johnson can run 19.66 then 19.32 in the same year, then Bolt can run 19.67 and 19.31 in the same year as well. I humbly ask that our Pastor bless him so that he can accomplish this great feat.

The most significant win is not the four gold medals in the Olympics but gold in the 200 and 400 as Johnson is the only man in the world to date who has achieved that.

I am, etc.,

JOHN F. BLACK
