ProF Anthony Harriott, in a forthcoming book, explores organised crime in Jamaica. The expert researcher examines the structures and linkages and deposits an antidote to tackle the cancer.
The book provides a critical understanding of Jamaican gangland, especially against the recent revelation by the hierarchy of the Jamaica Constabulary Force that there are about 150 gangs operating across the island. Twelve of these are believed to be responsible for the majority of murders committed here.
Police statistics also indicate that over 80 per cent of the murders committed in the island are gang related.
Harriott defines organised crime as a phenomenon that responds to the demand for illicit goods and services, such as narcotics. It provides protective services to local businesses and communities in areas that are underpoliced.
