Fun at the races
published: Monday | July 14, 2008

Verene Lewis' wide-brimmed hat won first place as the most creative at the RJR Communications Group Jamaica St Ledger at Caymanas Park last Saturd - Colin Hamilton/Freelance Photographer

They thought of everything to keep the 600 special guests entertained for more than five hours at Caymanas Park on Saturday. From the cooling implements of cold towels, battery-operated hand-held fans and ice-cold beverages on arrival, to the tasty hors d'oeuvres and lunch, as well as spot prizes, best-dressed male, hat and dance contests, a fashion show and live performances by LUST and the C Sharp band, the RJR Communica-tions Group Jamaica St Leger was a fun event on and off the tracks.

Even those who were only there for the races had a great time watching their favourite horses run from the comfort of their seats under the big tent, in front of one of the many monitors which beamed live coverage of the races that day.

A fun day

Indeed, it was a day of fun, food and fashion, with most of the women donning creative hats to match their outfits, many of which had hints of yellow and purple - the colours of the RJR brand.

The fun began when radio personality Jenny Jenny took to the stage and got guests to participate in a series of contests, including best dressed and hat competitions. And it was Verene Lewis' dramatic wide-brimmed hat (dubbed 'the coconut hat' by Jenny Jenny) that got the audience's vote as the most creative, while Egbert Von Frankenberg was named the Best Dressed Male. Comedic moments came with the 'Gully Creepers' dance contest among executives from corporate Jamaica, to whom Jenny Jenny felt obliged to give dance lessons on the spot.

Highlight of the event

But the highlight of the event was the presentation of the RJR Communications Group Advertising Awards for 2007-2008. Advertising Agency OGM Integrated, together with corporate entities GraceKennedy and Digicel were the leaders with five awards each, while advertising agencies Marketing Counselors and Quantum received four and three awards, respectively.

Among the premier awards was the Golden Microphone for the top advertising agency, which was won by Marketing Counselors, with OGM Integrated receiving the Silver Microphone as runner-up in that category. GraceKennedy was named the top advertising group and received the Golden Microphone, while Digicel came in second for the Silver Microphone.
