NOTE-WORTHY

Native, not Red

I have never before found it necessary to react to language used in The Gleaner. But, as a Jamaican who has lived in Canada for many years, I am surprised to read a reference to Nurse Sybil Evans working among 'Red Indians'. The accepted designation for many years has been 'Native' or 'First Nations' people. Although I did not know Sybil, I am confident she would prefer the designation chosen by the people with whom she worked.

Gov't should ...

Gov't should subsidise all farmers, not just small farmers. Gov't should remove all taxes in relation to fertiliser. Gov't should promote, encourage and foster agriculture and solar energy by all means.

Human rights 1

Monsignor Richard Albert has sent the following feedback to Don Robotham's Sunday Gleaner article (July 6) titled 'Nolle Prosequi':

Dear Don,

You have been producing some excellent articles. I am a member of Jamaicans For Justice and a human rights organisation and I have been speaking to the people. I think we have to weigh two things: the human rights of suspected gangsters as opposed to human rights of the poor and innocent who have been murdered. We must put a stop to bloodletting; it destabilises the country and creates a sense of despair.

Human rights 2

Father Albert also sent this feedback to Ian Boyne:

Dear Ian,

I read your recent article in the Sunday Gleaner, July 6. I agree with you one hundred per cent. We have to put a stop to bloodletting and protect the human rights of those killed by these thugs. I hope you are well and come to Sligoville for a visit.
