PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):
The Jamaica-bred 2007 Horse of the Year, Swing By, flopped in Trinidad and Tobago's (T&T) Derek Cozier feature Saturday as the four-year-old gelding Storm Street ran out a good winner.
The United States-bred Storm Street came from behind and won the TT$100,000 (US$16,459) Derek Cozier Memorial Sprint by 2-1/2 lengths under leading jockey Ricky Jadoo for trainer Glen Mohammed and owners Dachin Racing Stables.
Sprinting from early
The four-year-old Sweet Alex led the 1100-metre sprint early but had no answer to Storm Street's finishing burst.
Jadoo roused his mount for a strong run down the homestretch and after surging past Sweet Alex, comfortably repelled a late challenge from Personal Encounter to flatten the five-horse field in one minute 05.00 seconds.
Storm Street won ahead of Personal Encounter under Venezuelan jockey Luis Rodriquez, with Ready Set Jet a further 5-1/2 lengths back in third spot.
Great speed
Swing By, on her 2008 season debut, showed good early speed but faded badly and finished last.
At the Jetsam Awards just under a month ago, Swing By was unchallenged as 2007 Horse of the Year after logging five wins in the season, including big victories in the WITRA Classic and President's Cup.
Swing By had raced in Jamaica as a three-year-old, winning the 2006 Jamaica Fillies Guineas and Jamaica Oaks at Caymanas Park before moving to T&T later in that season.
Champion jockey Brian Harding scored just one victory on Saturday's card and failed to gain on Jadoo, who logged a double. Harding won the 1200-metre second race with Highway Runner by half-length in one minute 08.60 seconds.
