THE EDITOR, Sir:Leighton Sharras wrote a letter to you opposing the Jamaican Government's green signal to deaf drivers on roads. He argued that the deaf cannot react to sirens or emergency vehicles as they cannot hear. He asked that the Government withdraw its order.
But I set an example. It is well known that it is mostly hearing drivers of trucks, buses, even cars, that are involved in fatal and nearly fatal accidents. This has been so for a long time. It is well known that some violate traffic rules as well.
Deaf drivers, like me, in India, are more careful, compared to hearing drivers, though they face a few problems like sirens, etc. They deserve equal rights.
