SIMONE FACEY was the only mild surprise in Jamaica's 51-member track-and-field squad named by the Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association (JAAA) yesterday for the Olympic Games in Beijing next month.

Facey, who failed to make the women's 100m final last weekend trials, is in a squad which will be led by the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, who ran 9.72 to erase Asafa Powell's 100m world record of 9.74 in May, and reigning 200m Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown.

Former world 100m record holder Powell, Danny McFarlane, who won silver in the 400m hurdles at the Athens Games in 2004, and World Championships silver medallist in the decathlon, Maurice Smith, form the backbone of a strong men's team.

Female contingent lead

Sherone Simpson and Aleen Bailey, both members of Jamaica's winning 4x100m team in Athens, and Brigitte Foster-Hylton and Delloreen Ennis-London, both World Championships medallists in the 100m hurdles, plus Novlene Williams-Mills, who won bronze in the 400m at last year's World Championships, lead a strong female contingent.

The squad includes 30 newcomers in Marvin Anderson, Andre Wellington, Nesta Carter, Ricardo Chambers, Allodin Fothergill, Marvin Essor, Lansford Spence, Markino Buckley, Isa Phillips, Adrian Findlay, Herbert McGregor, Dorian Scott and Aldwayne Sappleton. The new women Olympians are Shelly-Ann Fraser, Sherri-Ann Brooks, Simone Facey, Nickiesha Anderson, Rosemarie White, Shareefa Lloyd, Shericka Williams, Bobby-Gaye Wilkins, Anastasia Le-Roy, Kenia Sinclair, Korine Hinds, Chelsea Hammond, Vonette Dixon, Andrea Bliss, Melaine Walker, Nickeisha Wilson and Olivia McKoy.
