The Editor, Sir:
First of all, let me take the opportunity to commiserate with the family of Douglas Chambers for their unimaginable and profound loss. He was a man of great courage, professionalism, and unmatched love of country. Jamaica has lost a valuable and rare human asset. May his contribution to his country be recognised by the government and people of Jamaica, and most importantly, may he rest in peace.
Acknowledgement
It is also a very appropriate time to acknowledge another person of equal ilk, in the person of Danville Walker, and the work that he is doing to restore ethics in the conduct of persons in the public service and other parastatal agencies. Apart from these two gentlemen, there are other people, in the Jamaican civil service, who refuse to compromise their professional integrity and do all in their power to safeguard the state assets they are entrusted with. They need to be applauded and encouraged.
Ridding the country of the scourge of wanton waste, graft and corruption will take many more individuals of their calibre, as well as the commitment of all in public office, to uphold the public trust. Jamaica must resist all efforts, on the part of the corrupt few, to transform it into a 'thiefdom'.
I am, etc.,
