Everton Nelson, teacher of the successful Quest Preparatory quiz team, is encouraging teachers across the island to persevere despite the challenges they face each day in the classroom.
Nelson, who coaches the Quest Preparatory team in the KFC quiz competition, was speaking at a teachers' meet-and-greet session recently. Nelson led Quest Prep to the latest of their three KFC quiz titles.
"It's easy to throw in the towel when there seems to be no end to the needs of some of our students, and our efforts appear to make little or no difference ... , he said.
"Let us not be weary in our serving; we must do our best for those in need ... failure is not defeat unless you stop trying."
Interact beyond classroom
Nelson also urged teachers to take on a role beyond the classroom when interacting with their students.
He said he believed teachers should seek to equip children with the skills that will enable them to become the best they can be in whatever discipline.
"My philosophy of education focuses on the students and their needs. They must be encouraged to see their potential, he said.
"Every student will come to me from different backgrounds, facing different challenges. My job is to provide each student with the best possible chance of success in my classroom and in the world outside, where most of the lessons take place."
Nelson's recommendations
Establish a relationship with each student in the class.
Teachers should monitor their attitudes to students they dislike or expect to learn very little.
Engage in equal and positive classroom behaviour by giving eye contact to each student in the room.
Deliberately move towards and be close to all students, including slow achievers.
Attribute the ownership of ideas to the students who initiated them.
