Forget the celebrities, be yourself
published: Saturday | June 28, 2008

Sharaine McCallum, Contributor

McCallum

Have you ever heard anyone say celebrities are 'just like us'? Sure, they can walk and talk, but in my opinion they are very different from us, especially me.

You don't see me being chased up and down the street by a million fans and paparazzi. You don't see flashing lights and microphones when I walk on a red carpet. And you certainly don't see me getting awards for my achievements such as doing my homework or singing in the shower. So, I'm clearly not Rihanna, Chris Brown or Kanye West.

Two stupid words

Sharaine's best shot: Dash those dreams of becoming 50 Cent's baby mama. He ain't takin' you to the Candy Shop. - File

I don't get paid a cent for giving a speech on world hunger or HIV/AIDS and yet Adam Sandler was paid US$ 1 million for saying two stupid words: "I'm gay!" Now isn't that ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate celebrities. However, I think that they should do a lot more than act crazy just to get publicity, especially some of the celebrities in Jamaica.

Gangster music has an impact on the increase of crime and violence. Instead of singing about how guns are ruining people's lives, these gangsta singers are singing about putting a bullet in someone's head.

What really makes me sick is when celebrities have their pants down, showing off their underwear? In music videos, girls are so attracted to that kind of thing. In real life, however, no decent girl wants a guy who shows his underwear to the whole wide world. But now almost every boy or man is copying this style, thinking it's cool.

One last point: Have you ever said something like, "Oh my gosh, Mavado is my man!" or "One day I'm going to be 50 Cent's wife! I love him so much."

News flash! They don't even know you exist, so stopping obsessing over them! They don't talk about you and they certainly don't want to marry you. In fact, some of them are already married.

Also, don't copy their style. They dress the way they do and sing the lyrics they sing because they want to make money and project an image. Even if that means humiliating themselves and throwing away that thing called dignity, they'll do it.

We are nothing like celebrities, so just be that special someone that you see in the mirror every day.

If you want to rant or blow your top about anything in society that's getting on your nerves, feel free to email feedback along with your photograph to andre.wright@gleanerjm.com. Let off some steam!
