Solving crime
published: Friday | June 27, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

The subject of violent crime continues to elicit widespread debate among Jamaicans. However, most of the solutions put forward are less than convincing, even those recommendations put forward by the eminent Dr Thompson. Things such as changing the name of the Police Force is absurd and will not create an honourable institution.

To develop an efficient police force will require a complete restructuring of its management structure, recruitment process and improvement of its investigative capabilities. The police force must put in place a system to attract quality Jamaicans, similar to those brought from abroad. Additionally, more genuine research needs to be done to determine the causes of crime. Based on the debate taking place, it seems we are unsure of what is behind the high level of criminality pervading society. Therefore,we are unable to come up with workable solutions.

I am, etc,
