Railway squatters given 'walking' notice
published: Friday | June 27, 2008

WESTERN BUREAU:

Transport and Works Minister Mike Henry has warned that the illegal occupants of the Railway Corporation's property in Montego Bay, St James, must relocate.

The minister made the demand yesterday following a tour of the city's road network.

"If you are on the railway land illegally, now is the time to declare to me how you got there because we need those areas to be able to re-establish the railway," Henry said during a press conference after the tour.

He said an evaluation would be undertaken to determine the squatters and how they can legally contribute to enhance the development of the railway operations.

Meanwhile, Henry revealed that 70 inspectors would be added to the Transport Authority in another six to nine months to address the severe shortage at the department.

"The city is faced with a lot of problems related to discipline and control and that is why the Transport Authority has got to play an important role," he said.

The five-hour tour of Montego Bay included the viewing of traffic signals along Segment 2A of the North Coast Highway, meeting National Works Agency officers, and the viewing of the Queens Drive (El Greco) project and the transport centre at Bogue.
