Cleaning the garrisons
published: Tuesday | June 24, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I am going to borrow from words of Mrs Obama that caused a lot of comments in the media in the USA primary election. For once, in my adult life, I am proud to be a Jamaican, reason being, that at long last I hear the voice of someone else calling on our two political leaders to give up their garrison contstituencies. Thank you Mrs Robinson and Mrs Williams, and now let all who love this land lend us your voices and let us demand this for the good of our country.

When the head of the stream gets clean the bottom will get clean also.

It has always amused me to see how cowardly our leaders have been. Most of them have used the people within these communities to secure their seats during election and then turn their backs on the majority afterwards. They, like the white 'jancrow' go for the eyes of the carcass and leave the rest for the others. They distribute tax money to so-called leaders to make sure everybody else are kept in line. Most of us know this but are too afraid to speak out.

Like criminals

Jamaica's biggest weakness over the years is politics and politicians, just like how criminals join the police force to cover their activities, some of our politicians do, and then they select their army and place them in strategic positions to protect the forts.

If Mr Golding is to live up to his promises by weeding out politicians, who are linked to criminals, I believe the garrisons would vanish. My advice, go further than just leaving the garrison, but to also repent. Change is the new slang, change starts from within, I am talking to the man in the mirror, I am asking him to change his ways.

I am, etc.,
