Vanessa Williams at CFW
published: Monday | June 16, 2008

Keisha Shakespeare-Blackmore, Staff Reporter

Vanessa A. Williams, popularly known from TV shows such as the The Cosby Show and Soul Food, was among the list of celebrities at last weekend's Caribbean Fashionweek (CFW). Flair spoke to her when she arrived last Thursday.

KSB: Why did you decide to be a part of CFW?

VAW: I am grateful to be part of a wonderful event that showcases fashion from the Caribbean. It is great that we can all come together and show off our own style.

African people are very stylish and usually influence the world of fashion. We are like the purveyors of cool. The black culture is so inventive and creative, whether it is language, music, or fashion.

What is your style?

My style is anything that looks great, simple and chic. I like classic pieces, I am not a Chanel type of girl but I love designs that are sleek and enhance the body.

What is you favourite piece?

My skinny jeans. I like outfits that are body conscious and enhance the better part of my assets (long legs, a great neck and arms). I like outfits that make me feel sexy and beautiful. Clothes can really do a lot for you, though it does not make the woman/man, but it can enhance your beauty.

Which piece of accessory you couldn't live without?

I love my earrings. I don't think I could live without them.

Is it your first visit to the island?

No, but the last time I was here was on Bob Marley's 50th birthday celebration. I love Kingston. It reminds me of Brooklyn, my hometown; it has the same kind of vibes.

What is your favourite Jamaican dish?

My favourite Jamaican foods are ackee and callaloo. I am a vegan, so I don't eat saltfish. During my visit, I am, looking forward to plantain, rice and peas and, of course, ackee and callaloo. I even stopped at a vegetarian restaurant after I landed to get ackee but they did not have it, so I am definitely going back to get it before I leave.
