Fashionable at any age
published: Monday | June 16, 2008

Keisha Shakespeare-Blackmore, Staff Reporter

1994: Dr McDonald as a young mother. - file photos

We are starting a monthly series that looks at women who have remained fashionable, while dressing age-appropriately, over the years. We will look at their hairstyles, shoes, clothes and accessories and how these women keep up with the trends while maintaining good taste. Our first fashionable woman is Dr Olivia McDonald.

Over the years, she has maintained a fabulous sense of personal style, whether at the office, out with friends or on the social circuit. She always turns heads wherever she goes, and she makes many of her garments, too!

KB: How do you manage to dress age appropriately over the years and maintain a stylish look?

OM: If your budget is small, buy classic pieces. These tend to be timeless.

Which piece of clothing, accessory, etc, you couldn't live without?

Something seems missing if I'm not wearing earrings.

What is your favourite hairstyle?

Favourite hairstyle is something short. Although it's so hot now, at times I feel like I'd grow it again so I could just pin it up.

Describe your look.

My look depends on what's in fashion that I like and looks good on me. I am not going to wear something because it is fashionable if I am not comfortable in it. My views are not cast in concrete, as something that I may not like initially, could grow on me eventually. Right now, a lot of people are wearing the baby-doll look. Regrettably, at this point, as cool and as comfortable the look appears, I don't see myself in it. Maybe if I was a slimmer person, I may look at it in a different light.

Tips to give women your age on how to be stylish.

Wear something that you like that fits well and something that you feel confident in wearing.

Which piece of clothing do you like to sew the best?

My preference in sewing is really dresses and skirts. I never mastered the art of making button holes.

If you know a woman who has kept up with the trend, yet dress age appropriately drop us a line at Keisha.Shakespeare@gleanerjm.com.
